A migraine is a debilitating, severe headache that affects adults and children alike. The pain in a migraine is known to be very severe and usually worsens with movement. Moreover, there are several triggers to the occurrence of a severe headache.
These triggers include extreme physical activity, hormonal changes, stress, food consumption of some types of food, intake of certain medications, sensory stimulus, and other changes that involve the season, time, and weather.
You might have noticed that most of the triggers have something to do with the physical environment and lifestyle, things that could be manipulated and controlled.
People who are most susceptible to migraines are those who have a familial history of migraines. Migraines run in the family. You are most likely to get migraines if both your parents have them too. And yes, if only one of your parents has it, you are still vulnerable to contracting it.
Gender too has a role in a migraine. Most of those who are affected are usually females or women. The incidence of headaches is equal for both girls and boys, but only until the girls reach puberty, then headaches increase for the girls. The severity of a migraine worsens when a woman has her monthly menstruation period. Although, many women with migraines report that during pregnancy, the migraines lessen. However, it has always been reported that during the first trimester of pregnancy it could worsen again.
How to Deal
Medication has improved for a migraine. It is now able to treat and provide relief from migraine head pain. However, it would be better if you avoid getting a migraine in the first place. Here’s how.
A migraine is usually triggered by stimulants in the environment. Thus, it is only logical to submit yourself to a calm environment. If you can, try to miss out some of your usual activities.
- Try relaxing in a dark and quiet room.
- You may take a nap if you like.
- You can also place a hot or cold compress to your head and neck. Use an ice pack for your cold compress. It is usually is effective in giving a numbing effect. This is especially useful if you have head pain.
- Heating pads and hot packs also put your tense muscles at ease. If you can, take a warm bath or shower because it usually has the same effect.
- Sleeping well can also do the trick. You can get migraines because of lack of sleep.
Therefore, it is very important that you have regular hours of sleep. Try waking up and going to bed at the same time every day. If you have a hard time sleeping, try listening to soothing music, read a book, and soak in a warm bath.
Avoid drinking caffeinated drinks and alcohol during bedtime. Try not to eat much also, since this disrupts your sleeping time. If you want to sleep, avoid watching television. Do not do your work in bed and shut your bedroom door. If however, you still have difficulty sleeping, do not force it. It only makes matters worse. Simply do a quiet activity and it is a guarantee that you would fall asleep without you knowing it.
